What Is a Dynamic QR Code, and Why Is It Better Than a Static One?

There are two kinds of QR code, and the difference is about what is written inside the code.

Static QR code

The destination address is embedded directly in the code. Once printed, the destination can never change — a new address means a new code and a new print run.

Dynamic QR code

The code contains a short redirect address. The phone goes there first and is then forwarded to the real destination. When you change the destination in your dashboard, the printed code stays the same but leads somewhere else.

What that means in practice

  • The code on a campaign poster redirects to a new page when the campaign ends.
  • The menu code on the table switches from the summer to the winter menu — without touching the tables.
  • If you printed the wrong address, it isn't a disaster; you fix it from the dashboard.

The measurement difference

A static code cannot know how often it was scanned, because there is no stop in between. With a dynamic code every scan is counted: how many people, when, from which device.

Any downside?

A dynamic code works as long as the redirect service keeps working. That makes the service's longevity important — once printed, it has to stay up for years.
